Volunteering

Thank you for your interest in the Indiana Free Library's Volunteer Shelver Program. Our dedicated team of volunteers is responsible for shelving materials in the proper place in the library, checking the shelves to ensure that they are in order, and sorting carts of materials to be shelved. Training is provided.

Qualified candidates will be:
  • At least 16 years of age;
  • Confident with arranging English-language materials alphabetically and numerically;
  • Able to push and pull moderately heavy loads and to kneel, bend, climb, and stretch frequently;
  • Detail-oriented, precise, reliable, and responsible;
  • Able to work independently;
  • Able to obtain Criminal Record and Child Abuse History clearances (for U.S. citizens at least 18 years of age; others may be required to submit alternative documentation);
  • Willing to commit to at least a full term (fall and spring semester, or summer session) of volunteer service; and
  • Available from 3 to 5 p.m. one or two days a week (excluding Fridays and Sundays).

Applications for the Volunteer Shelver Program are accepted on an ongoing basis and are available at the library's front desk. Applications are retained for six months, and candidates who meet the library's needs will be contacted as openings arise.
